Tualatin Youth Basketball Competitive Program

For Boys and Girls Grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8th, and whose home address is within the Tualatin High School boundaries (check address here): This Program is at a competitive level of basketball for the more serious player.  Game schedules will consist of local school, OAB, Hoopsource, Great 48, and other tournaments.  Suggested tournament schedules will be provided, but each TYBA competitive team has the ability to create their own game schedule from the various tournaments available.

At each grade level, there is the possibility of forming 2 teams depending on the number of athletes trying out and ability levels. This will also determine which level of play in tournaments (Gold/Silver/Bronze division) they enter as a team. Players must tryout in order to be considered for a team. TYBA requires players to participate in at least 1 tryout session for boys, however, we recommend players make both.  Girls tryouts will be held in 1 day.  If your player cannot participate at either tryout for medical reasons, you must have a valid medical note from a doctor and provide that information to the respective Competitive VP (see Board of Director's contact info here).

Registration: By registering, you are not guaranteed a spot on a competitive team; players must tryout and make a team.  After tryouts are completed and teams are chosen, TYBA will send an invite to individual players/family to accept their assigned team and pay for registration/uniform.  For those players that do not receive a competitive team invite can chose to register and play in our Youth Rec program.  Team invites come with a deadline date to act and accept, so please follow instructions closely.

Head Coaches: All of our Head Competitive Coaches must fill out an application and pass a background check to be eligible to coach with TYBA.  Qualified applicants will be offered an interview with members of the Board of Directors.  If you are interested in helping us as a Head Coach, registering is the first step.  Interviews will take place prior to the scheduled tryouts.  Once registered, the respective Competitive VP will reach out to schedule an interview date/time. Since Head coaches pick their assistant coach/s there is no need for the assistant coach to interview or apply until Head Coaches are selected.

Practices:
Beginning in November, practices are scheduled twice a week and aligned to TTSD's gym availability.  In addition to practices, teams will have an additional day for skills practice assigned per grade.

Competitive Fees: Typical costs to play competitive range from about $400-$600 depending on the number of tournaments a team enters. Registration cost for the competitive program is $150.  This cost covers the base registration as well as additional skills and player development practices with our skills and agility coaches.  Uniforms typically cost under $100 and tournaments average around $25 per player per tourney, plus any travel costs for out of town tournaments.

Season: Each team plays between 25 and 40 games, depending on grade and the types of tournaments selected by the team's coach.

COMPETITIVE TOURNEYS

Tournaments are a great way to pack in several games on a weekend in a short time, offer players the opportunity to work on their game, get players lots of playing time, and create team bonding experiences.  And the players LOVE them!

There are many tournaments all over Oregon for teams to participate - from the Sisters Shootout to the extremely popular (and several weekends) of tourneys in Seaside.  Be sure to reserve your hotel early if traveling, or ask your Team Parent if there will be a group rate at one hotel so your team can stay together (or at least as close as possible). Most tournaments don't announce game times until the Wednesday before the start of the tourney, so keeping your kids ready to go makes it easier for everyone.

These tournaments each require a team registration fee, as well as gym entry fees for spectators, that are not included in TYBA's registration fees.  Your Coach will decide which tournaments and how many tournaments your team will join for the season.  Also, some tournaments require medical releases, so please have your information up-to-date with your Coach.

Player Development Program (Skills)

TYBA includes a Player Development Program (Skills) for competitive teams.  This program consists of an additional practice night designated specifically towards improving skills and agility.  This will be facilitated by our competitive coaches and volunteers.  The curriculum for this program is designed in partnership with the Tualatin High School Basketball coaching staff.  Cost for the Player Development Program is $25 per player for the season, which is included in the base registration fee.

Annual Chris Powers Competitive Scholarship Fund

Our good friend and TYBA board member, Chris Powers, lost his battle with cancer in early 2022. In his memory we started this fund for a full-ride competitive scholarship. The recipient will have all of their expenses covered when playing for a TYBA competitive team, including registration, uniform, tournament fees and other team costs. Anyone applying for a regular competitive scholarship is eligible for this very special coverage. To apply, download and submit the scholarship application found under the Registration menu HERE

Any and all donations to this fund are very much appreciated.  Please look for the donation button when you check out during registration.
